Introduction to Surface Coatings
ENROL ANY TIME.
In this introductory course, we aim to give an introduction to the materials, product types, uses and technologies that are used in surface coatings. It is designed for people who work in the coatings and related industries, but who are not graduate professional scientists.
There is no technical background required. We do not discuss the chemistry of the coatings or ingredients in any detail, but rather focus on the fundamentals of the topics.
Who should apply?
The audience for this course spans a wide spectrum from those people directly involved with coating operations, to those who are just keen to learn more about the topic of surface coatings. Whilst the following list is not necessarily exhaustive we feel it could be representative of those who may benefit from the course:
Employees of:
- Paint manufacturers
- Printing ink manufacturers
- Raw material suppliers and distributors
- Coatings retailers
- Painters, applicators and fabricators
- Specifiers, architects, designers
Roles such as:
- Sales and Marketing
- Customer Service
- Factory operators
- Laboratory technicians
- Office & Administration
- Purchasing
For detailed technical content, graduate scientists are directed to SCAA’s ‘Advanced Course in Surface Coatings Technology’.
How will you benefit?
SCAA’s education programs are well accepted and valued by the coatings industry, both in Australia and internationally.
Upon successfully completing this course, you will be able to:
- Identify the main reasons for the use of surface coatings
- Recognise the main applications or end-uses for surface coatings
- Recognise the four main classes of component ingredients used in surface coatings
- Understand the main ways that surface coatings are generally classified.
Once you have completed the assessment quiz for all lessons, you will be able to print off your SCAA course certificate.
Course prerequisites and exemptions
As this is an introductory-level course, there are no prerequisite qualifications or experience. Given the specialised nature of the course, exemptions will not be considered. All students are required to complete all lessons.
Please note that a good level of English language ability is required. As a guide, we refer you to the Sample provided below.
Hardware / Software requirements
The course is designed for modern browsers on computer desktops, laptops and tablets.
Course Structure
The course comprises 13 e-lessons, the first of which is a short introduction to the course. Ideally the lessons should be completed in the given sequence.
The early lessons cover the main classes of coatings ingredients which are the building blocks from which coatings are made. We then look at three topics which relate to coatings of all types, and finally the second half of the course is devoted to the main types of coatings themselves.
- Lesson 1 Course Introduction
- Lesson 2 Raw Materials – Binders (Polymers and Resins)
- Lesson 3 Raw Materials – Solvents & Additives
- Lesson 4 Raw Materials – Pigments
- Lesson 5 Coatings Manufacture
- Lesson 6 Colour – Measurement & Matching
- Lesson 7 Safety, Health & Environment
- Lesson 8 Architectural Coatings
- Lesson 9 Heavy Duty & Marine Coatings
- Lesson 10 Automotive Coatings
- Lesson 11 Industrial Coatings
- Lesson 12 Printing Inks
- Lesson 13 Adhesives & Sealants
Assessment
There are no external assessments for this course. Each lesson includes a ‘Final Assessment Quiz’ comprising five multiple choice questions. When you have correctly answered all five, you will have successfully completed the lesson. Then, when you have completed all the lessons, you will be able to print off your SCAA certificate.
Within each lesson there are several ‘self-assessment’ questions which do not count toward your Final Assessment Quiz, but are there to help you check your learning during the lesson.
