Professional Grading
Professional Grading within Surface Coatings Association Australia is a qualification awarded by the Association in recognition of a member’s professional standing in the surface coatings industries. The grading takes into account academic qualification together with training and experience as well as contribution to the industries.
Professional Grading was introduced in the international surface coatings community by the Oil and Colour Chemists Association in 1971. In June 1977, the Australian Federal Committee of the Australian Association established similar grades in Australia. The initial Australian scheme utilized qualifications in education and experience at equivalent levels to those of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute for Associate and Fellow, as were in operation at the time. It was considered that this would lead to cross-industry recognition and international portability The Association undertook to promote the acceptance of its Professional Qualifications by government, industry and appropriate kindred societies within Australia and elsewhere.

In 1990 with the change of name from “Oil and Colour Chemists Association, Australia” to “Surface Coatings Association, Australia Inc” and the adoption of a new Constitution and Rules, the number of Professional Grades was increased by the addition of a Licentiate grade. This reflected the change in structure of the Association’s membership and followed similar changes within RACI and OCCA.
During the early 1990’s negotiations were held between the Councils of SCAA and OCCA. These culminated in 1993 in the formation of the Unified Professional Grade Register, which is maintained by OCCA at its administrative headquarters in London, on behalf of the participating Associations (currently OCCA – and its international groups – SCAA and SCANZ).
SCAA Members of the Professional Grade are issued with an International Certificate which is signed by the President of SCAA and by the General Secretary of OCCA, as administrator of the scheme.
A full listing of members of the Unified Professional Grade Register is published each year in the December issues of “Surface Coatings International” and “Surface Coatings Australia”.
